The Japanese in reality do not willingly sacrifice their own interests for the sake of the group or organization to which they belong. Neither do they always follow majority opinions like that of many totalitarians. Japanese society, rather, is based on "corporativism" where its organizations are supported by the members who cooperate willingly with fellow members as they think it essential to do so. There are no bilateral oppositions such as group vs. individual involved. What we find here at the beginning is what may be termed as reciprocal inter-dependence between a group and its members.

Some of you may recall the well-known TQC, that is, Total Quality Control, activities in Japanese businesses. Here the workers voluntarily form kaizen groups for the purpose of improving the quality of their work, including the quality of products themselves. They also engage in their "circle" activities in order to propose to the company a new improvement for a more efficient manufacturing procedure. These are the evident cases of "corporativism" at work in Japanese society.

What is aimed at in these cases is "symbiosis" between the individual and his or her organization. The forming principle found in these small group activities is not based on such dichotomic scheme as "groupism" vs. "individualism."

The reason why the organizational principle of "corporativism" can function well in Japanese society is because flexibility and dynamism are inherent in the overall behavioral structure of the Japanese. [..]

This makes me remember this quote:

Who is smarter an american or a japanese?

The american is smarter!

Who are smarter two americans workers or two japanese workers?

The two japanese workers are smarter!
