supply of methamphetamine can be had by the faithful.
Our welfare is based on petroleum. (limited resource)
That we can drive cars.
That we take it for granted..
Our easy lifestyle, welfare system, security and government,
and, naturally, mobility and wealth for some.
There is not one single product that you can buy with money short of 'food from the farm gate' that does not utterly depend on petroleum for its availability to the consumer. Many products could not exist without readily available petroleum.
E.g. Plastics.
I am cynical about the idea native english speakers can know anything about the reasons behind the comings and goings of the people who live in the Middle East and who have occupied these lands for millenia.
Even were you to go there you could do nothing
but say "Okay, we are in Syria now",
try to find a mouthful of food and
then finally try an find a way to leave.
The only true thing a native english speaker can 'do' in the Middle East is "get the gasoline and bring it back home".
If you want to call 'services' a product, as we do in NZ,
then you may able to get certain products, without needing petrol.
Apparently an individual sexless person can provide another individual
sexless person service as a professionally provided product independently
of any need to use petroleum in its provision.
And if the job is over the hill then you can always walk to it.
Somewhat paradoxically, though you may get to the service
product job without implementing a car, it would be impossible to
pay for it because both bank notes and eftpos machines are made of plastic.

The world will have 2 Centuries of Motoring, 3 at best.
Then it will be back to good old Feudalism again.
And a massive peasantry (probably cannibal peasantry)
scrounging around in the dirt and dust for a potato or corncob.
Petroleum is the key vector in all phases of the food production process.
Because of population growth and the Just In Time(JIT)
management model that stocks your supermarkets
and kitchens with food, if the petroleum stops flowing,
there will be worldwide starvation of cataclysmic proportions.
Mass evacuation of the cities will occur as people plod slowly
towards the farms on foot; the mythical source of our nourishment;
all converging hordes of starving people, bedraggled as the lowly rat,
reaching and clawing for Feudalism in the vain hope it can feed us.
The hope that there is still a bite of it left to be had.
There isn't.
Feudalism is gone, existing only in Europe in a forgotten and
dead dream inhabited by fair skinned Christian Kings and Queens.
Cannibalism will rush in mercifully carrying with Him a big cookpot.
