Anyway, the Roman Empire produced some interesting astronomical observational and computational equipment, as did all of the ancient empires, at one time or another.

What is interesting about the mechanism is merely that it exists, although even had it never been discovered no one would have doubted the sophisticated nature of classical clockwork engineering (cf Archimedes).
