They are an increasing phenomenon and sometimes succeed. One of the most famous is the Star Trek campaign after it was cancelled in the 1960s, which led to the movies & later Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987.
Another, which I was part of in the 1990s, was the campaign to pressure the BBC to return Doctor Who.
