Obviously they exist, but they are few and far between. They tend to work in think tanks, rather than universities. There are exceptions, such as a centre of excellence on rational economics in GMU.

One point I didn't stress, is on the difference between genuine academic expertise, and the undeserved aura and reputation emanating from that expertise.

Thus a very common phenomenon is to have a person who is an expert on a narrow field (think Chomsky and linguistics or Einstein and physics), then using his reputation and name to express views on completely unrelated subjects.

There are no academic experts on proper political policy. It is not a scientific area of study on which any person can claim expertise. Consequently, political views expressed by intellectuals come with undeserved credibility.
