Satire for January 2011 - Page 5 - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Wandering the information superhighway, he came upon the last refuge of civilization, PoFo, the only forum on the internet ...

Political and non-political satire; all those terribly biased analogies live here.

Can we Brits help it if we're smarter than anyone else? Yes, ours is a heavy burden.... *sigh*

Yeah, just like your food is better than everyone else's...

Hey, we spend so much time thinking that we've very little left over to develop a decent cuisine. Never mind, we've solved that problem by just cherry-picking other nations' cuisine instead. Did you know that the most popular food in Britain is now curry rather than fish-and-chips? :)

Anyhoo, this issue raises an important point about British culture - it is essentially literate rather than visual. Even our jokes tend to be verbal and intellectual rather than visual or slapstick comedy. It's due to the Reformation and the increased focus on the written text of the Bible. This is probably why we have so few great painters and so many great poets. It also presents a problem when it comes to political cartoons, however - cartoons are an essentially visual form of humour, and tend to lack textual depth or semiotic complexity. Not to worry, though - we can fix that by simply superimposing complex semiotic texts on top of the visual image, so that it has to be read like a written text. And, as a bonus, only those who know the political and social context of the cartoon in great detail will have the codes necessary to read those texts. So we end up looking smarter than everybody else. It's win-win! :D

Benny Hill was an un-British abomination who was more popular in America than in his own country. We have disowned him. Disowned him, I tell you! >:

What about your tendency to treat men wearing dresses as somehow inherently funny?
