Lat Am leaders highlight historical significance of Cuban Revolution
It's good to see solidarity being expressed by various countries. It's important to return to this subject, as the Cuban revolution still matters quite a bit for the Latin American Left and will continue to matter in years to come.
Lat Am leaders highlight historical significance of Cuban Revolution
Santiago de Cuba, July 26, (RHC), -- Latin American leaders highlighted Friday in Santiago de Cuba the example set by the Cuban Revolution as beacon of sovereignty and dignity to the peoples of the region.
altDignitaries from the region, including Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Bolivian President Evo Morales, Uruguayan President Jose Mujica and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, are attending the main political/cultural event commemorating the 60th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada Garrison in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba.
Speaking at the national commemorative act, President Maduro highlighted Cuba's role as inspiration for the subjugated peoples of the continent, adding that the emancipation and integration of Latin American is now possible thanks to the struggle of the Cuban people.
Likewise, the head of state of Uruguay, José Mujica, thanked Cuba for being an example of sovereignty and dignity.
In his address before more than 10,000 people gathered on Friday at the esplanade of the former Moncada garrison in Santiago de Cuba, the Uruguayan dignitary underlined the importance of respecting diversity in an increasingly globalized world.
“We cannot allow any nation, no matter how powerful it is, to impose its will to the rest of the world's peoples,” he said.
For his part, the President of Bolivia Evo Morales, praised Cuba's solidarity with many nations across the globe, including his country, highlighting in particular the Miracles program for visually impaired, from which some 700,000 Bolivians have benefited.
He also referred to Fidel Castro's guidance in the struggle of Latin American against imperialism.
Similarly, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega welcomed the presence in Santiago de Cuba of various heads of state and prime ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean and said that Cuba had enriched its people with health, education and culture.
Ortega also spoke against the economic blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, saying the end of such criminal policy was approaching.
