In a year I intend to get a car - my first car (and I have no previous driving experiance.. ), Im asking for people's suggestions and opinions.

Im currently looking at the Dodge caliber.

I went to Dodge.ca (Im in Canada) and priced out what I wanted.

2007 Caliber SXT D Pkg.
- ** 2.0L 4-Cyl. DOHC 16V Dual VVT Engine
W/ Continuously Variable Transmission
- Cloth Low-Back Bucket Seats
- P215/60R17 BSW AS Touring Tires
- 17X6.5-in. Steel Wheels
- 4 speakers
- AM/FM Compact Disc Radio with Changer Control and MP3 capability
- Air conditioning
- ** Security Group
- Anti-Lock Front Disc, Rear Drum Brakes
- ** Fog Lamps

Its the basic SXT "D" package, as the cheaper SE model does not have AC.
** = options I added.
Getting the "security package" for the air filters.

Total is $20,355 CAD (talked to a dealership, they confirmed this price)
priced with the USA site, its $17,360 USD

The car I will use has to move the occational load of lumber (4'x8' sheets, 2"x4"s, etc), large cargo items at times, groceries and sometimes people (friends, dates, etc).

Minivan is to big, sedan is too small (unless its a full size)

Im also looking at the Golf/Rabbit, but they are a bit to expensive for my first car.

Does anybody have any knowledge about the Caliber ?
especailly foibles/problems.

Does anyone know a better car in this price range (15-22 k) ?

- Im a big guy so cars like KIAs are very bad.

The Caliber is too new to have known problems of reliability, but the sure thing is that it has been acclaimed by the press around here and trust me it's not easy to do so that quickly.

Reliability should not be a problem: it's a DaimlerChrysler production, the Caliber is said to be well built and with much care, and if you take the diesel engine it'll be a TDI lended by Volkswagen.
