Potemkin wrote:Agreed, though I would add the caveat that Wilde wrote a non-fiction book about his political beliefs, The Soul of Man Under Socialism. While not Marxist, per se, it presents a witty and succinct case in favour of a communist (in the widest sense of that word) society.

Yes, I was going to mention that Wilde was an anarchist, influenced more by Kropotkin than Marx. And I definitely recommend The Soul of Man Under Socialism.

I can understand why you exclude Marx and Engels, it would be an odd Marxist that didn't like Marx, but Lenin? Even if you consider Lenin to be the most awesome politician ever, does that mean you have to enjoy his writings? He strikes me as pretty tedious and endlessly repetitious. He sort of batters the reader into submission.

Lenin's writings lay the groundwork for the political philosophy that bears his name. Which also happens to be the most widely accepted form of Marxism.

Trotsky (a perhaps too seductive writer)
Gramsci (I get more out of the Prison Notebooks on second reading)
Perry Anderson (he's just so.. informed)

Wasn't the consensus that Althusser was a proto-pomo fraud?

Wasn't the consensus that Althusser was a proto-pomo fraud?

While I don't agree with all of Althusser's positions during his heyday in the 60s and 70s, I would not describe him as "a proto-pomo fraud". The problem with Althusser is that his reputation was trashed in the immediate aftermath of his psychotic break when he sorta-accidentally-but-not killed his wife. Althusser was a broken man after that, and felt the need to 'expiate' his sins by indulging in abject self-criticism of his life's work. His enemies and critics took advantage of this fact by inducing him to renounce and condemn almost all of his previous positions. His reputation has never recovered from this.
