I know the (local) government *loves* to print stories of prostitution busts, despite such places being very visible, and locations being common knowledge to the general public. Oops, guess they forgot to pay off the police.

I know grand public campaigns to stop DVD piracy but with policemen themselves buying from the same DVD vendors. Went into a shop where a guy told me to come back the next day, since the police had informed him they were doing a raid. How nice of them to give him a warning.

I remember large protests in the streets of 武汉 (Wuhan) because the government was (once again) smashing homes to put in a new shopping mart. Compensation? 1,200RMB. Not nearly enough, but hey, what can they do? Complain to the government?

I also remember the time I was looking out the window over at 中南财经大学 (Zhongnan University of Economics and Law), watching a lone student get jumped by fifteen guys, with a policeman standing 10 feet away, looking in disinterest, and leaving the guy laying on the sidewalk. Two passing university girls came over to help. Man, the 公安 really don't do much, do they? My students weren't especially surprised. "This is China", they said, as if that explained everything.

And I love that little phrase often used when anything odd, weird or bad about China is talked about----"It's China!" Most often used in response to anything that seems totally illogical or unreasonable, and by shady taxi drivers who apparently handle baggage fees for the airport, paid directly to them, because hey, "It's China".
